Welcome to our web site. So what's this all about? Let me tell you…
I head up dragracing team Studebaker Racing Co. We race in the Australian National Group One category of "Top Doorslammer". The sport of Dragracing is renowned for its named classes. This is yet another one. The term Doorslammer came from and is used in the USA and other countries for some other sedan classes. "Doorslammer" in Australia is similar to USA Pro-Mod but with quite different rules. As the name suggests the cars must all have doors, as apposed to the one-piece Funny Cars which may run similar engine and drive line components. The word "Top" is a generic term used for Group One.
Aussie Doorslammers are fibreglass/carbon fibre bodied, tubular chassis sedans weighing about 2700lb (1200kg) with driver. The bracket started in Australia in 1995 by a few "Wild Bunch" racers headed by legend Victor Bray. He pressured ANDRA to allow them to move from the Group Two bracket Competition Eliminator and form a new Group One bracket running "heads up" meaning no handicapping, it's first to the end of the quarter mile wins.
Dragracing in Australia is controlled by ANDRA who from time to time impose rule changes in the pursuit of fair competition and spectator appeal. ANDRA want Doorslammers to look like original OEM so has restricted car models we can copy and changes we can make to the body. Doorslammers are ‘black belt" drag cars which means they run a mechanical supercharger. They have mechanical fuel injection and 500 cube + (8+ litre) aluminum V8 motors running on methanol (alcohol). At optimum revs these motors develop up to 3500hp. With a 3 speed planetary gear box and 10" + three disc clutch these sedans cover the quarter mile in 6 seconds at speeds exceeding 240mph (390kph).
Studebaker Racing Co races the "Moonshine bandit", a 1959 Studebaker. Our local track is Quit Motorplex, Kwinana Beach ( Perth, Western Australia) where we run in Top Comp (local equivalent of Group 1) except for when a round of the Australian Top Doorslammer Championship (ATDC) is on. We have sponsors which are featured to this page. Our main focus each season is to try and win the ATDC. The competition is currently run over seven (7) events, split between Perth (2), Brisbane (3) and Sydney (2). We are looking forward to Melbourne coming on stream in the future which should extend our season to up to 10 rounds.
We started dragracing is 1998. In 2000 we held the Australian record and were runner up in the ATDC. That year we also ran the equal quickest time in the world at 6.17. This has since been surpassed so we have some catching up to do. We are still one of the quickest and most successful Top Doorslammer teams in Australia. The competition in the bracket is getting tougher all the time but that adds to the challenge.
A normal season's planning is to run the ATDC series plus the other National events in Perth that are outside the ATDC. This year is no different.
