Judd to quit drag racing

Leading Top Doorslammer drag racer, Robin Judd, will call it quits at the end of this weekend’s (Friday to Monday, June 10-13) 45th annual Fuchs Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway, Ipswich.

Announcing his retirement, Perth-based Judd, one of Australia most successful Top Doorslammer racers, said he has lost the passion for the sport and felt the time is now right to retire.

Australia’s quickest Doorslammer racer, Judd also cited increasing business commitments, a looming global recession and the sport’s lack of the direction as contributing factors to his retirement decision.

While Judd’s drag racing career will come to an end this weekend, he is also looking to finish on a high, by winning the season-ending Fuchs Winternationals, considered Australia’s most prestigious drag race event.

Judd was runner-up at the 2009 and 2010 Winternationals and is keen to win this year’s event to add to his two Australian Nationals (2009 and 2010) and Goldenstates (2009) titles.

“While I have enjoyed the past 14 years racing in Top Doorslammer, it is now time to stop. Apart from losing the passion there are a number of reasons why I will be finishing my drag racing career at the end of this season,” Judd said.

“My business commitments require a lot more of my time and wearing my accountant’s hat, I believe the economy is going to tighten in the short to medium term. The commercial and management issues facing the sport make the business case difficult and Group One drag racing has not moved forward to where I believe it should be which disappoints me.”

Judd chasing first Nitro Champs win

Robin Judd is looking for his first major event win for the season when he competes at this weekend’s ninth annual Nitro Champs at Sydney Dragway, Eastern Creek from Friday to Sunday, May 4-6.

Perth-based Judd top qualified in the first all five-second Top Doorslammer field in (Australian National Drag Racing Association) ANDRA Pro Series history at the previous Doorslammer championship event, held at Sydney Dragway in March 24.

Aeroflow/William Buck team went to the Sydney March event with one goal, to bridge the 35.5 points needed to take the Top Doorslammer Pro Series championship lead.
Judd was on track to move up the championship point’s ladder after taking maximum qualifying points and speed bonus points after recording his fastest-ever speed 251.02mph (403.97km/h) during qualifying.

However, Judd went out in the semi-final after his Aeroflow/William Buck ’59 Studebaker lost traction due to poor track conditions following an oil down from an earlier competitor in his lane.

Only Judd’s driving skills saved him from crashing after the Studebaker moved sharply, broadsided and crossed into his opponent’s lane. Crossing the centre line is an instant disqualification.

Robin Judd top qualified in the first all five-second Top Doorslammer field in the history of the (Australian National Drag Racing Association) ANDRA Pro Series at Sydney Dragway, Eastern Creek, Saturday, March 24.

Perth-based Judd was in 15th place and out of the eight-car field after not recording a time when the start-light malfunctioned in his lane during the first qualifying session.

Judd then moved straight to the top qualifying spot with a 5.896-second at 249.39mph (401.35km/h) pass in the second session, which saw six of the eight competitors in the five-second zone.

Perth Top Doorslammer drag racer, Robin Judd, is hoping he can repeat past performances when he races at Sydney Dragway, Eastern Creek this weekend – Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25.

Judd reached the final at the past three consecutive Australian Nationals at Sydney Dragway, winning the 2009 and 2010 titles and runner-up last year.
Judd was also the first Australian Top Doorslammer racer to run into the 5.7-second zone, a
5.779 second pass while testing at Sydney Dragway for last year’s Nationals.

“I believe our Aeroflow/William Buck ’59 Studebaker is more suited to Sydney Dragway than any other track on the championship series pro tour,” Judd said.

Having fought his way back into (Australian National Drag Racing Association) ANDRA Top Doorslammer championship series contention at the recent Westernationals at the Perth Motorplex, Judd is looking to reach another Sydney final to set up a run for the championship series with two events remaining after this weekend.

“The Perth Motorplex maybe our home track, but Sydney Dragway is our most successful and therefore must be considered our favourite track, Judd said.

Perth drag racer, Robin Judd, fell just two-hundredths of a second shy of winning the 41st annual Westernationals (March 3-4) and taking the Australian Top Doorslammer championship lead at the Perth Motorplex, Kwinana Beach.

Judd needed and got a good result at the Westernationals, West Australia’s largest and prestigious drag racing event, to get back into the (Australian National Drag Racing Association) ANDRA Top Doorslammer championship series race.

With the Westernationals carrying 50 percent bonus points to entice interstate teams to travel to Perth for ANDRA Pro Series championship rounds, Judd took the maximum 12 qualifying points when he top qualified and then earned the maximum 15 bonus points on offer after recording the Top Doorslammer quickest elapse time and fastest speed of the event.

Judd was not in the eight-car field after the first qualifying session, but moved to the top of the qualifying list with a 5.861-second at 250.00mph (402.33km/h), a new Top Doorslammer track speed record, in the second session.
