Robin Judd tonight put on an awesome display of Top Doorslammer racing to win Round 2 of the National Championship and move to second position. The Studebaker Racing Co proved they still have the quickest Doorslammer in Australia by rattling off a 6.25 second pass in the semi's for a new track record and a string of 6.30's to separate the team from its rivals by an impressive margin.
Judd's team knew they were in for a feast after the "Moonshine Bandit" laid down a loose 6.303 off the trailer. This run proved to be top qualifier with Peter Kapiris going down by only one thousandth of a second with a 6.304 in the other lane. This run was the quickest side by side pairing ever at Adelaide and the one of the closest ever. What made the quick times even more significant was that with the dry and hot conditions, corrected altitude was close to 3000 feet.
Choosing to sit out the last two qualifiers, the 'Moonshine Bandit' was fresh for the first elimination. The time posted was an identical 6.303 against Rob Broadbent's troubled 7.36. Broadbent's parachutes became tangled and he ended up in the gravel trap.
The semi final against 6 times National Top Alcohol Champion Gary Phillips became low ET for the meeting with Judd's Studebaker running 6.25 versus Phillips' 6.61. Phillips also runs a Studebaker, his first foray into Top Doorslammer. He made the semi by forcing Dave Koops to a red light in the first round. A win against Phillips is significant - in any category!
Current point leader Brett Stevens made the final after defeating Victor Bray in Round 1 (6.41 to a 6.46) and having a solo in the semi. Peter Kapiris hurt his engine during his Round 1 win against Marcus Chambers and couldn't get the car ready in time. After long side by side smoky burnouts both Studebakers got very loose at mid track with Judd's 6.31 @ 221 mph overpowering Stevens' 6.46 @ 216.
Judd said after the win,"It was great having such an easy run. After our previous problems we have gone back to basics with our set up and it's proved to be the right move. There's a long way to go in the Championship so let's hope we can keep repeating these performances".
Tonight's results have seen a major reshuffle in the points.
