Perth , Western Australia June 19, 2006 Following the running of the Castrol Edge 2006 Winternationals the ATDC comes to a close for another year with Robin Judd and the "Moonshine Bandit" finishing a close up fourth in the points. According to ANDRA this is how they finished;
The Winternationals was all but washed out when rain stopped qualifying for most of Saturday. Organisers were forced to make up the Group 1 elimination fields from the one run Friday night. This disappointed many of the racers but with 600+ competitors to be fairly dealt with it was inevitable qualifying would have to be restricted. The Willowbank Track staff did a great job to ensure racing could start early on Sunday morning and for the competitors to have a good track to run on for the finals. Qualifying Results
Only the 8 quickest cars qualified for eliminations leaving some big names to go home early. Despite the cloudy cool conditions many teams attacked the track with aggressive tune ups expecting to run quick numbers. The more cautious teams were rewarded. Judd had some problems in running but managed to secure 4 th position with a 6.22. "The track was cold, sticky on the start line but loose further out. I spun the tyres and it shook a little so I short-shifted into second gear. The boys said they could hear the clutch being murdered until I activated the lock up and high gear." Judd said about the one shot qualifier. Elimination Results (data and commentary courtesy of Willowbank Raceway) Round 1
Expecting conditions to be a little better but similar to Friday night, the team had made adjustments to soften up the set-up to try and avoid tyre shake. Unfortunately, the adjustments were not enough but Judd wins the race regardless. Round 2
A disappointing result for Judd as a simple error costs him the chance to race the Grandfather of Top Doorslammer Victor Bray, who incidentally went on to win the final. Judd said "Victor was going to be hard to beat this weekend. In shooting terms you would call it a "nice grouping" - he has run a pair of 6.09's, a 6.03 and a 6.05 on a track most of us had problems with. After my recent good fortune I said to him I had been lucky, his reply to me was "it's funny, the more testing you do the luckier you seem to become" meaning hard work pays off. Victor (amongst others) was able to test in the week leading up to the Winternationals so I guess what he was saying was true". Of his misfortune in the race Judd said "Reaching for the handbrake after the burnout my glove brushed the ignition kill switch button cutting the electrics. I have never done that before but testing the switch afterwards it appears the push-pull button may have lost it's "clunk". We'll put in a new one but re-locate it over head some where so that can never happen again. We never stop learning" Full results and commentary can be found on these web sites; |
