Western Australian racer Robin Judd set the pace in qualifying for the Winternationals in Top Doorslammer by running a world record 6.179 @ 220.26 mph. In near perfect conditions the 'Moonshine Bandit' proved all you need is a simple combination that works to mix it with the best in the world. Coincidentally, Judd's time of 6.179 is identical to that achieved by pro mod racer Fred Hahn at an IHRA race meeting in Canada only a week earlier.
"We run a single magneto, Rootes style supercharger and relatively low overdrive", Judd said. "The air was around 200 feet, 1200 lower than April when we ran a string of 20's. I knew the air was thick because I got quite a jolt when I popped the chutes. Everything hooked up despite having a little tyre shake when I shifted into second gear. I expected to run quick but to have run a 'teen is fantastic - I can't believe it".
Inside Motorsport's editor Bret Kepner (USA) was quoted as saying "It might interest you to know that Judd is only the third doorslammer driver, (behind Joey Moore and Randy Merick), to run under 4.00 in the eighth-mile". He went on to say, "Judd's 330 foot time is the quickest on record".
What makes this run even more interesting is that Andrew Searle ran a 6.25 beside Judd's 6.17 to make it the quickest side by side Doorslammer pass in the world. Both cars went under one second at the 60 foot mark.
Unfortunately, rain stopped racing before the second qualifier so organizers decided to postpone the meeting until October 6-7. The first qualifier counts, so if Judd gets low ET bonus points (which is almost certain) he will win the championship if he can finish just one place ahead of Koop and Bray. As qualifying stands Bray is on the bump spot so now we all have to wait for the outcome of this three way battle.
