Willowbank, Queensland: After not qualifying in Round 2 of the ATDC Perth racer Robin Judd and his crew were determined to do better at the Australian Nationals.
Judd ran all 3 qualifiers like a bracket car, times being consistently in the low .40’s. A best of 6.406 put Judd in position 7 out of 13 cars. Unfortunately, Judd’s 6.452 was no match for Ben Bray’s 6.222 in the first elimination round. Bray went on to beat his father Victor in the semi-finals then won the event from Gary Phillips, 6.318 to 6.383.
The shock of the meeting was Peter Kapiris not qualifying after 3 attempts. The bump spot of 6.429 is an indication of just how tough Top Doorslammer has become.
A philosophical Judd said, “We were pleased to get into the field and to run so consistently all weekend, we’ve being trying to do that for a while. The best part is we didn’t hurt anything which is just the place we wanted to get back to after being lost for so long. We can now concentrate on getting quicker. The irony is I remember only a couple of years ago, if you ran consistent low .40’s you were almost guaranteed of winning the event. How things change - look how this bracket has developed over that time. I am proud to have been one of the racers responsible for lifting the bar.”
