Perth Top Doorslammer racer Robin Judd and his team are ready to head east to take on the best at the Australian Nationals to be held at Willowbank Raceway, Queensland on January 21 – 23, 2003. Judd and his team have spent the off season refurbishing the “Moonshine Bandit” in readiness to have a tilt at the Australian Top Doorslammer Championship.
Judd said, “The competition is getting tougher with more teams coming into the bracket and the bar being continually raised. The regular guys like Phillips, Stevens, Kapiris and the Brays are always going to be hard to beat, let alone the other talent rising up in the ranks. It’s great for the sport but real tough when you are trying to win your first Championship.” Last season Judd finished sixth in the points after a series of problems cost him valuable points.
When asked about his chances in 2003/04, Judd said, “The Bandit has been totally stripped, checked, re-wired and the chassis sandblasted and repainted. I’ve turned over a lot of the old gear, replaced with ‘state of the art’ and beefed up the spares. We have to make the most of this season or the bracket could get away from us. We can run consistent teens but need to run 0’s to be a real threat this season. Our mission is to gain consistency with the soft tune up we run at the moment and as we gain consistency, lean on the combo a bit more to go that bit quicker. We’ve been here before and it’s easy to get lost. I don’t want to do that again.”
To enable some testing, the team entered the car in a local race meeting in Perth on November 8. Judd made the A final in Top Comp after having completed only one full pass (6.54 @ 226mph) however, an engine problem kept them out of the final.

After the Australian Nationals, round 2 of the ATDC is in Perth where Judd hopes to gain a home track advantage. Round 3 is the Pacific Nationals, to be held on February 6-8, 2004 at the new Western Sydney International Dragway. This event promises to be the biggest event of the year.
